The YouTube thumbnail size most creators use is 1280×720 pixels, a 16:9 ratio, and that is exactly what this YouTube thumbnail size converter makes. The thumbnail is the picture people see before they decide to click: on the home page, in search, next to other videos and on TVs. If your design has the wrong shape, it is cut off or shown with empty bars. If it is too heavy, the YouTube app on your phone refuses it. This page answers the common questions (what size is a YouTube thumbnail, which ratio, how many pixels, how big in inches) and lets you resize an image to YouTube thumbnail size in a few seconds. You can crop the picture to fill the frame or keep all of it with a border. Below we also explain how the tool decides what to cut, show how much of different photo shapes survives, and list our own measured file sizes.
How does the YouTube thumbnail converter work?
The tool decodes your image in the browser and turns phone photos the right way up using their orientation tag. Then it draws the picture onto a blank 1280×720 canvas in one of two ways:
Fill and crop (centred): the image is scaled by the larger of 1280 ÷ image width and 720 ÷ image height, so it covers the whole frame. The part that sticks out is trimmed evenly from both sides, or from top and bottom.
Fit inside (add border): the image is scaled by the smaller of the two numbers, so all of it fits. It is centred and the empty space is filled with your border colour (white by default).
The canvas is then saved as JPG at 92% quality, unless you choose PNG or WebP or move the Quality slider under More options. The file is named like photo-1280x720.jpg.
Worked example (measured). On our own test photo, a 2000×3000 portrait JPG of 672.9 KB, Fill and crop scaled it by max(1280 ÷ 2000, 720 ÷ 3000) = 0.64, giving 1280×1920, then kept the middle 720 rows. The result was 1280×720 and 108.5 KB. Fit inside scaled it by 0.24 to 480×720, centred it with 400 pixels of white border on each side, and gave 1280×720 at 89.6 KB. Both are tiny compared with YouTube’s 2 MB mobile upload limit.
How to use
Add your image
Drop, choose or paste (Ctrl+V) an image. JPG, PNG, WebP, AVIF, iPhone HEIC, GIF and BMP open. The YouTube thumbnail 1280×720 size is already selected.
Choose the fit
Fill and crop (centred) fills the 16:9 frame and trims the edges. Fit inside (add border) keeps the whole picture and adds a border in the colour you pick.
Download and upload
Click Download for the 1280×720 JPG, then add it as the custom thumbnail in YouTube Studio. For PNG, open More options.
Why VidHaul
Exactly 1280×720, 16:9
Every image comes out at the classic YouTube thumbnail size with no stretching, well above YouTube’s 640 pixel minimum width.
Crop or keep everything
Fill and crop centres your picture and trims what sticks out. Fit inside keeps the whole image and fills the gap with your border colour.
Small enough for phone uploads
Our test thumbnails were 89.6 KB and 108.5 KB as JPG, far under the 2 MB limit YouTube sets for uploads from the mobile app.
No upload, no watermark
The image is resized in your browser and never sent to a server. No account, no logo on your thumbnail.
YouTube thumbnail size and requirements
YouTube’s help page lists these rules for custom video thumbnails. We checked it in November 2026; YouTube does change them from time to time.

So what is the best YouTube thumbnail size? For most channels 1280×720 is the sweet spot: it is sharp on phones, laptops and TVs, it is light enough for the 2 MB phone limit, and almost every design template uses it. A larger 1920×1080 or 3840×2160 image only helps if your source picture really has that much detail.
What size is a YouTube thumbnail in pixels, and what about other sizes?
All of these are the same 16:9 shape, just with more or fewer pixels:
640×360: the smallest YouTube accepts. Fine for a quick test, soft on a TV.
1280×720: the standard. This page makes it with one tap.
1920×1080: Full HD. Use the image resizer, choose Exact size, type 1920 and 1080 and pick Fill and crop.
3840×2160: 4K, the largest YouTube suggests. Same steps in the image resizer. Only worth it for very sharp sources, and check the file size if you upload from a phone.
Resizing up cannot add real detail. If your design is 800 pixels wide, a 3840×2160 copy is not sharper than a 1280×720 one, just bigger.
How much of my picture is kept? Fill and crop vs Fit inside
Most images are not 16:9. A phone photo is taller, a square design is too narrow. The chart shows, for common shapes, how much of the picture stays with Fill and crop. The same number is how much of the 1280×720 frame your picture covers with Fit inside; the rest is border.
Grey bars: more than 40% would be cut off, so Fit inside or a new layout is usually the better choice. Computed from the crop formula the tool uses (the smaller of the two aspect ratios divided by the larger).
Use Fill and crop when the important part (a face, a product, your title) sits in the middle and the shape is close to 16:9. Use Fit inside for vertical photos, posters and screenshots where nothing may be lost. A border in your channel colour looks planned rather than empty; pick it with the border colour picker that appears when you choose Fit inside.
How to resize an image for a YouTube thumbnail
Add the image. Drop it on the box, click to choose it, or paste a screenshot with Ctrl+V. You can add up to 30 images at once, for example thumbnail ideas you want to compare.
Choose the fit. The YouTube thumbnail 1280×720 size is already active. Pick Fill and crop or Fit inside; the result updates by itself, there is no Start button.
Check the result line. It shows the size before and after and the pixel size, for example 672.9 KB to 108.5 KB, 1280×720.
Download. Click Download, or Download all (ZIP) for several. Copy summary copies the sizes as text if you want to keep a note.
On a phone
Open this page in Chrome on Android or Safari on iPhone, tap the box and choose the image from your gallery or Photos. The JPG lands in Downloads or the Files app; pick it from there in the YouTube Studio app.
On a computer
Drag the file into the box in any current Chrome, Edge, Safari or Firefox. Uploads from YouTube Studio on a computer allow much larger files, so PNG is fine there too.
JPG or PNG for a YouTube thumbnail?
The tool saves JPG at 92% quality by default. That suits photos, faces and gradients and keeps the file small. Open More options to switch to PNG, which is lossless and keeps sharp text and flat colours perfectly clean, but is usually bigger. WebP is also offered, but YouTube’s help page names JPG and PNG, so we suggest those for the upload. A YouTube thumbnail size PNG is still 1280×720; only the file type changes.
If you choose PNG and upload from the phone app, check the size on the result line. If it is over 2 MB, go back to JPG, or lower the Quality slider (50 to 100%) under More options.
YouTube thumbnail size in inches, cm and dpi
Screens work in pixels, so YouTube only cares that your image is 1280×720 pixels. The dpi number stored in a file does not change how it looks on YouTube. Inches matter only when you print. These figures are simple arithmetic (pixels ÷ dpi):
Printed size of a 1280×720 thumbnail. Computed: pixels divided by dots per inch.

YouTube thumbnail size in Photoshop, Canva or Procreate
In any design app, start a new canvas of 1280×720 pixels (or 1920×1080 for more room) and work in RGB. Keep the important text away from the bottom-right corner, where YouTube shows the video length. If you already made the design at another size, or a client sent you a square image, you don’t need to rebuild it: export it and drop the file here. Fill and crop or Fit inside gives you a clean 1280×720 without stretching faces or text.
Make a thumbnail from your own video
A frame from the video itself is often the most honest thumbnail. Grab one with video to JPG at the exact second you want, or save many with video to frames and pick the best. The last frame extractor is handy for the final scene. A frame from a 1920×1080 video is already 16:9, so Fill and crop keeps 100% of it and only scales it to 1280×720.
Thumbnails for Shorts
YouTube’s help page now lists Shorts thumbnails as vertical 9:16 images (up to 2160×3840, at least 640 pixels high). This page makes the horizontal 16:9 size only. For a vertical cover, use the image resizer and its Story / Reel 1080×1920 preset, which is 9:16.
Tips for thumbnails people can read
Design for a small screen. On a phone a thumbnail is only a few centimetres wide. Three to five big words at most.
Keep the bottom-right corner clear for the video length label.
One clear subject and strong contrast between subject and background.
Look at the downloaded JPG at small size before you upload it. If you can’t read it there, viewers won’t either.
Start sharp. A source at least 1280 pixels wide gives the cleanest result.
Why was my thumbnail rejected?
No upload button: your account is not verified yet. Verify it in YouTube Studio.
File too big on phone: the mobile limit is 2 MB. Use JPG; our 1280×720 JPGs were around 100 KB.
Wrong format: HEIC, AVIF or WebP files may be refused. The JPG you download here works. To convert other files without resizing, use HEIC to JPG, WebP to JPG or AVIF to JPG.
Too small: under 640 pixels wide is refused. Resizing to 1280×720 fixes the rule, though a tiny source will look soft.
How accurate is this YouTube thumbnail size tool?
The pixel size is exact: every result is 1280×720, because the tool draws onto a canvas of exactly that size. The parts that can vary are:
The crop is always centred. There is no manual drag to move the crop. If your subject is near an edge, Fill and crop may cut it; use Fit inside, or crop the image in another app first.
File size depends on the picture. Busy, detailed images give bigger JPGs than flat graphics. Our two tests gave 89.6 KB and 108.5 KB; yours may differ.
Upscaling is soft. A small source enlarged to 1280×720 meets the rules but cannot gain detail.
Animated GIFs are reduced to their first frame.
YouTube’s rules can change. We report what YouTube Help said when we checked; if an upload fails, read the current help page.
Why this tool is different
Most online thumbnail resizers upload your image to a server, process it there and send it back. This one does the whole job inside your browser. The image is decoded with the browser’s own image decoder, drawn onto a 1280×720 canvas with high-quality smoothing, and saved with the browser’s own JPG, PNG or WebP encoder. Nothing travels over the internet, so unreleased designs and photos of you or your family stay on your device. Once the page has loaded, resizing works even without a connection.
It is also open about what it does. There is no hidden “smart” cropping: the crop is a simple centred cut, and the scale factor is the plain formula shown above, so you can predict the result before you click. Phone photos are turned upright from their orientation tag first, so a sideways selfie does not become a sideways thumbnail. You can resize up to 30 images in one go with the same settings, and Copy link with these settings (under More options) saves your choices in a link to reuse later.
What we measure
For each image the tool reads its width and height after turning it upright, computes the scale and position, and after saving it measures the new file’s size in bytes. That is what you see on the result line: size before, size after and pixel size.
What we do not do: we don’t detect faces or objects to place the crop, we don’t judge whether your thumbnail is “clickable”, we don’t add text or effects, and we don’t check your file against YouTube’s servers. We don’t collect your images or any data about them.

Making a channel banner too? The YouTube banner size tool makes 2560×1440 channel art. To shrink any image to a size in KB, use the image compressor.
Only use images you own or have the right to use in your thumbnails.
Use a 16:9 image at least 640 pixels wide. 1280×720 is the long-standing standard and is what this tool makes; YouTube’s help page now also accepts images up to 3840×2160.
What is the YouTube thumbnail size ratio?
16:9, the same shape as a widescreen video. 1280×720, 1920×1080 and 3840×2160 are all 16:9.
What is the YouTube thumbnail size in pixels?
1280×720 pixels is the standard size. The minimum width is 640 pixels, which at 16:9 means 640×360.
What is the YouTube thumbnail size in inches?
Thumbnails are measured in pixels, not inches. Only for printing do inches matter: 1280×720 is about 4.3 × 2.4 inches at 300 dpi.
Is this a YouTube thumbnail size converter?
Yes. Drop any image and it is converted to 1280×720. Pick Fill and crop or Fit inside to decide what happens to the parts that don’t fit the 16:9 shape.
What thumbnail size should I use in Photoshop?
Make the canvas 1280×720 pixels (or 1920×1080 if you like more detail). If you already designed it at another size, drop the export here to get 1280×720 without stretching.
YouTube thumbnail ka size kitna hota hai?
YouTube thumbnail ka standard size 1280×720 pixels hai, ratio 16:9. Width kam se kam 640 pixels honi chahiye, aur mobile app se upload ke liye file 2 MB se chhoti.
Why can’t I upload a custom thumbnail?
Custom thumbnails need a verified YouTube account. Verify your account in YouTube Studio, usually with a phone number, and the upload option appears.
