GIF Compressor: Reduce Animated GIF File Size Online

Make animated GIFs smaller for Discord, chats, email and websites, right in your browser and with no upload.

Animated GIFs are fun, but the format dates from the late 1980s and files get big quickly. A few seconds of video saved as a GIF can be 10, 20 or even 50 MB. That is too large for many chat apps, slow on a website and often over the limit for Discord, email or forum uploads. This GIF compressor rebuilds your GIF so it stores much less data, and you choose how far to go with one setting: Light, Medium or Strong. It is an online GIF compressor in the sense that it runs in a web page, but the work happens on your own device, so the file is never uploaded. There is no account, no watermark and no limit. Below we explain exactly what each level does, show results from our own tests, and give tips for Discord, email and websites, including what to do when you need a GIF under a certain size.

How does the GIF compressor work?

A GIF is a stack of pictures, each with up to 256 colours. Many GIFs waste space in two ways: each frame carries its own colour list, and each frame stores the whole picture again even when only a small part moved. The compressor fixes both, in two passes over your GIF.

  1. One shared palette. It looks at up to 12 evenly spaced frames and picks one set of colours for the whole animation: up to 127 colours for Light, 63 for Medium and 47 for Strong, plus one slot kept for “no change”.
  2. Only store what changes. It then writes each frame again. Any pixel that looks the same as in the frame before is marked “no change” and costs almost nothing to store. In a reaction GIF where only a face moves, most of the picture is “no change”.

Medium and Strong also make the picture smaller (80% and 60% of the width and height), and Strong drops every second frame while giving the frame before it that extra time, so the animation still lasts as long. At the end, if the new file is not smaller than your original, you get the original back.

Worked example (measured in our own browser test on 2026-10-24, Chrome desktop): a 102 KB animated GIF came out at 101 KB with Light (1% smaller), 62 KB with Medium (39% smaller) and 22 KB with Strong (78% smaller).

How to use

  1. Choose a GIF

Click the box or drag in an animated GIF. You see its name and size.

  2. Pick a level

Choose Light (best quality), Medium (default) or Strong (smallest) in the Compression box.

  3. Press Start

The progress bar shows the GIF being rebuilt. You can cancel at any time.

  4. Check and download

The result shows the size before and after and how many percent smaller it is. Press Download, or try another level.

Why VidHaul

Three clear levels

Light, Medium and Strong. Each one does a fixed, documented set of things, listed in the table below.

Stores only what changes

Pixels that stay the same as the frame before are not stored again, which removes a lot of wasted data in most GIFs.

Never bigger

If the new GIF would not be smaller, you get your original back with a clear message, not a worse file.

No upload, no watermark

The GIF is compressed in your browser on your own device. No sign-up, no watermark and no daily limit.

Light was not tested on GIF B.
Our own measurements on two test GIFs. GIF B had already been optimised by the program that made it, so Medium could not beat it and the tool returned the original; Strong still cut it by more than half.

These two files show the full range you can expect. A GIF straight out of a screen recorder or a video converter usually has lots of repeated data and shrinks well. A GIF that someone already optimised has little left to remove, so only the stronger levels, which really throw away pixels, colours and frames, make a big difference.

Light, Medium or Strong: which should you use?

LevelPicture sizeColours (shared)FramesBest for
Light (best quality)100% (same)up to 127allQuality first; GIFs that were never optimised
Medium (default)80% wide and high (64% of the pixels)up to 63allMost GIFs for chats, Discord and websites
Strong (smallest)60% wide and high (36% of the pixels)up to 47about half, timing keptTight limits such as emojis, stickers or forum avatars

These are the exact settings in the tool’s code. Every level also uses the shared palette and stores only changed pixels. The picture is never made smaller than 16 px on a side.

How to compress a GIF, step by step

  1. Choose your GIF. Click the box at the top or drag the file onto it. Use “Change file” if you picked the wrong one.
  2. Pick a level. Medium is selected by default.
  3. Press Start. The progress bar fills as frames are rebuilt. Cancel stops it.
  4. Check the result. You see the size before and after and the percent saved. “Copy summary” copies those numbers.
  5. Download, or choose a different level and press Start again. Always start from your original file.

“More options” holds “Copy link with these settings”, which saves the level you chose in a link. The output is always a GIF.

GIF compressor for Discord

Discord has several different limits: one for normal file uploads, and much smaller ones for custom emojis and stickers. Discord changes these over time and they depend on your account and server, so check Discord’s own help pages for the current numbers. A practical routine:

  • Posting a GIF in a chat: try Medium. Most GIFs from screen recorders fit after that.
  • Custom emoji or sticker: these limits are tiny, so use Strong. Emojis are shown small anyway, so the 60% size is rarely noticed.
  • Still too big: make the GIF shorter. If you made it from a video, cut the clip again with video to GIF using fewer seconds or 320 px, then compress.

If you need to send a long clip, a video is often better than any GIF. The video compressor has a Discord preset that aims for under 20 MB, the free upload limit since August 2026.

GIF compressor to 10 MB, 5 MB, 1 MB, 512 KB or 256 KB

People often search for a GIF compressor that hits an exact size. This tool does not take a target size, and we would rather say so than pretend. Use the measured results as a guide: Medium cut our test GIF by 39% and Strong by 78%. So:

  • Need about a third off (for example 15 MB down to 10 MB): try Medium.
  • Need half or more off (for example 5 MB down to 2 MB, or 1 MB down to 256 KB): go straight to Strong.
  • Need more than Strong gives: shorten the GIF first. Length is the biggest factor in GIF size; half the frames is roughly half the file.

Compress GIFs for email and websites

Email: smaller attachments send faster and are less likely to bounce. Medium is usually enough. Many email apps play GIFs but not videos, so a GIF is the right format here.

Websites and blogs: a lighter GIF loads faster for visitors on mobile data. For long or large animations on your own site, a short MP4 is often far smaller than any GIF. Google’s web.dev guide shows a 3.7 MB GIF becoming a 551 KB MP4. Use GIF to MP4 for that.

Can you compress a GIF without losing quality?

Partly. The “store only what changes” step is lossless: an unchanged pixel looks exactly the same. The shared palette is where quality can change. Light uses up to 127 colours for the whole GIF, while the original may have used up to 256 per frame. For cartoons, screen recordings and most memes you will not see a difference. For colourful video clips with sunsets or skin tones, you may see slight banding. In that case Light is the best you can do while staying a GIF, and the honest alternative is a video.

Tips for the smallest GIF

  • Always compress from the original GIF. Compressing an already compressed GIF again loses quality and saves little.
  • Shorter is smaller. Cut to the key moment before making the GIF, with the video cutter or by setting start and end in MP4 to GIF.
  • If Strong looks too choppy, go back to Medium and accept a slightly bigger file.
  • Flat colours and still backgrounds compress best. Shaky camera footage compresses worst, because almost every pixel changes every frame.

How accurate is the GIF compressor?

  • Savings vary a lot. From 1% (Light on our first test GIF) to 78% (Strong). We cannot predict the result for your file; the result screen shows it.
  • Already optimised GIFs: Light and Medium may not beat them. You then get your original back with a message, never a bigger file.
  • Timing: kept. With Strong, the dropped frame’s time goes to the frame before it, so the total length stays the same, though motion is less smooth.
  • Colours: one shared palette for the whole animation, chosen from up to 12 sample frames. A colour that appears only briefly may be shown with a near match.
  • Transparency: see-through backgrounds are not kept and usually become black. Keep the original if you need a transparent sticker.
  • Limits: very long GIFs with hundreds of large frames can be slow on phones and may run out of memory.

Why this tool is different

Most GIF compressor websites upload your GIF, compress it on their server and send it back, often with a size cap and a wait. VidHaul does the work in your own browser tab. Your GIF never leaves your device, there is no upload limit set by a server, and nothing is stored anywhere.

We also show you the exact rules each level follows, instead of a vague “quality” slider. You know that Medium means 80% size and up to 63 colours, and that Strong also halves the frames. And the tool never hands you a file that is bigger than the one you gave it: with an already optimised GIF you get your original back and a clear message.

What we measure

The level settings on this page come straight from the tool’s code: scale 1, 0.8 and 0.6; 128, 64 and 48 palette slots (one reserved for “no change”); every second frame dropped for Strong. The results in the chart are our own measurements on two test GIFs in Chrome on a desktop on 2026-10-24. We did not test every kind of GIF, so we do not claim an average saving. The tool itself only measures one thing on your file: the size before and after, shown as a percentage. We do not collect or keep your GIFs.

Frequently asked questions

How to compress a GIF?

Choose your GIF above, pick Light, Medium or Strong and press Start. When it finishes, the page shows how many percent smaller the GIF is, and you can download it.

Is there a GIF compressor for Discord?

Yes, this one works well for Discord. Start with Medium, check the new size, and if it is still too big for your upload, emoji or sticker, run the original again with Strong.

How to use a GIF compressor without losing quality?

Use Light. It keeps the full size and every frame and only removes repeated data, but it does use one shared palette of up to 127 colours, so a few colour-rich GIFs can change slightly. On an already optimised GIF, Light may save very little.

Can a GIF compressor get my file to 10 MB, 1 MB or 256 KB?

There is no box to type an exact size. In our tests Medium made a GIF 39% smaller and Strong 78% smaller, so try Medium first and use Strong if you need to go further.

What does Strong compression do?

Strong makes the picture 60% of its width and height, uses up to 47 colours and drops every second frame while keeping the total timing. It gives the smallest file, but motion looks less smooth.

Is this GIF compressor free?

Yes. It is a free GIF compressor with no sign-up, no watermark and no limit on how many GIFs you compress.

Why did my GIF not get smaller?

Some GIFs are already well optimised by the app that made them. If the result would be bigger, the tool gives you the original back. Strong usually still helps.

Is my GIF uploaded to a server?

No. This online GIF compressor runs inside your browser, so your file never leaves your computer or phone.
