Instagram Photo Size: Resize Images for Instagram Without Cropping

Resize photos to every Instagram image size, square, portrait, landscape or Story, cropped or with a border. Nothing is uploaded.

The right Instagram photo size is 1080 pixels wide, and the height depends on the shape: 1080 for a square, 1350 for portrait (4:5), 566 for landscape (1.91:1) and 1920 for Stories and Reels (9:16). Upload a photo outside the allowed ratios and Instagram crops it for you, often not where you want. This page gives each Instagram image size as a button and resizes your photo in the browser, so you decide what stays. You can crop neatly from the centre or resize the image for Instagram without cropping by adding a border. Below are the official rules from Instagram’s help page, a chart of how much of a normal phone photo each size keeps, our own measured file sizes, and tips for carousels, Stories and the profile grid.

How does the Instagram photo resizer work?

Each photo is decoded in your browser and turned upright from its orientation tag. Then it is drawn onto a blank canvas of the size you tapped, for example 1080×1350:

  • Fill and crop (centred) scales the photo by the larger of frame width ÷ photo width and frame height ÷ photo height, so it covers the frame, and trims the overflow evenly from both sides.
  • Fit inside (add border) scales it by the smaller of the two, so the full photo fits, centres it and fills the rest with your border colour.

The result is saved as JPG at 92% quality and named like photo-1080x1350.jpg. PNG, WebP and the Quality slider are under More options.

Worked example (measured). Our test photo was a 2000×3000 portrait JPG of 672.9 KB (2:3). Square 1080×1080 with Fill and crop scaled it by max(0.54, 0.36) = 0.54 to 1080×1620 and kept the middle 1080 rows; the file was 157.9 KB. Story / Reel 1080×1920 with Fill and crop gave 241.3 KB, and with Fit inside 237.4 KB, where the photo became 1080×1620 with 150 pixels of border above and below.

How to use

  1. Add your photos

Drop, choose or paste up to 30 photos. JPG, PNG, WebP, AVIF, iPhone HEIC, GIF and BMP open.

  2. Tap a size and fit

Square 1080×1080, Portrait 1080×1350, Landscape 1080×566 or Story / Reel 1080×1920. Then Fill and crop (centred) or Fit inside (add border).

  3. Download and post

Download each photo or use Download all (ZIP), then post them on Instagram. Format and quality are under More options.

Why VidHaul

Every Instagram shape

One tap for 1:1 square, 4:5 portrait, 1.91:1 landscape and 9:16 Story / Reel, all 1080 pixels wide, the width Instagram uses.

Without cropping

Fit inside keeps the whole photo and fills the gap with a border colour you choose, so Instagram has nothing to cut.

Carousel ready

Up to 30 photos get the same size and fit, which is what a carousel needs so no slide is cropped differently.

No upload, no watermark

Photos are resized on your device and never uploaded. Free, no account, no logo on your posts.

What Instagram does with your photo

Instagram’s own help page explains the rules for feed photos:

  • Photos are shared at up to 1080 pixels wide.
  • A photo between 320 and 1080 pixels wide keeps its resolution, if its ratio is between 1.91:1 and 4:5 (height between 566 and 1350 pixels at 1080 wide).
  • Wider than 1080 pixels: it is reduced to 1080. Narrower than 320: it is enlarged to 320.
  • A ratio outside that range is cropped to fit a supported ratio.

That is why exactly 1080 pixels wide is the ideal Instagram image size: Instagram has nothing to shrink, so your photo is shown as you made it. A 4000-pixel original is not sharper on Instagram; it just gets reduced by the app.

How much of a phone photo does each Instagram size keep?

Phones take photos in 3:4 (upright) or 16:9 shapes, which rarely match Instagram exactly. The chart shows how much of the photo stays with Fill and crop for each button. With Fit inside, the same percentage is how much of the frame the photo covers; the rest is border.

Share of the photo kept with Fill and cropUpright 3:4 phone photoWide 16:9 photoSquare 1:175%56%Portrait 4:594%45%Landscape 1.91:139%93%Story / Reel 9:1675%32%Below about 60%, Fit inside (add border) usually looks better than cropping.
Computed from the crop formula the tool uses: the smaller of the two aspect ratios divided by the larger.

The clear winner for normal upright phone photos is Portrait 1080×1350: only a thin strip (about 6%) is trimmed from top and bottom, and the photo takes the most screen space in the feed. For wide photos, Landscape keeps almost everything but looks small in the feed; a square with Fit inside is often a nicer compromise.

Resize image for Instagram without cropping

To post a full photo, pick your size and choose Fit inside (add border). A border colour picker appears; white gives a clean gallery look, black suits night shots, and a colour from the photo makes the border feel part of the design. Here is what a typical 3000×4000 upright phone photo becomes in each frame (computed with the tool’s formula):

A 3000×4000 phone photo with Fit inside. Computed from the scaling the tool uses.
ButtonPhoto inside the frameBorder
Square 1080×1080810×1080135 px left and right
Portrait 1080×13501013×1350about 34 px left and right
Landscape 1080×566424×566328 px left and right
Story / Reel 1080×19201080×1440240 px top and bottom

Portrait with Fit inside is almost borderless for phone photos, which is why many people use it for “Instagram without crop” posts. The same works for Stories: resize image for Instagram Story without cropping by choosing Story / Reel and Fit inside.

Measured file sizes

Our own Chrome test, 2000×3000 JPG phone photo of 672.9 KB, JPG at 92%

Files this size upload quickly even on mobile data. Busy, detailed photos come out larger than these and plain ones smaller.

Which Instagram size should I pick?

Feed posts

Portrait 4:5 for people, food and most phone photos. Square for products, quotes or a tidy look. Landscape only for really wide scenes, because it appears smaller in the feed.

Carousels

In a carousel, the slides share one shape, so mixed shapes get cropped. Add all photos here at once, pick one size and one fit, and every slide comes out identical. Download all (ZIP) saves them together; on a phone you can also download them one by one.

Stories and Reel covers

Stories and Reels fill the screen at 9:16, 1080×1920. Keep text away from the very top and bottom, where Instagram puts your name, buttons and the reply bar. For a vertical video rather than a photo, use resize video or the video cropper. To pick a frame from a video as a cover, use video to JPG, then drop it here.

Profile grid and profile photo

The profile grid may show a trimmed, taller preview of each post, so keep the subject near the centre. Your profile photo is shown as a circle; the Square 1080×1080 button with Fill and crop works well for it, or use WhatsApp DP size for a lighter 640×640 square.

Instagram photo size in inches, and Photoshop

Instagram ignores inches and dpi; only pixels count. For printing, 1080 pixels is 3.6 inches at 300 dpi or 15 inches at 72 dpi (pixels ÷ dpi). In Photoshop, Canva or any editor, start a canvas of 1080×1350 for portrait posts or 1080×1920 for Stories. If you already exported at another size, drop the file here instead of redoing the design.

Formats: HEIC, PNG and transparency

You can add JPG, PNG, WebP, AVIF and iPhone HEIC photos; HEIC opens directly in Safari, and in other browsers a small converter loads the first time, still on your device. The result is JPG by default, the format Instagram handles best. Transparent areas in a PNG logo become white in JPG; choose PNG under More options if you need to keep them, though Instagram shows posts on its own background anyway.

How accurate is this Instagram photo size tool?

  • Pixel size is exact for every button, because each photo is drawn on a canvas of that size.
  • The crop is always centred. You can’t drag it. For an off-centre subject, use Fit inside or crop first in your gallery app.
  • Instagram may still process the photo. It re-compresses uploads, and the grid preview can trim posts. Resizing first avoids the unwanted crop, not Instagram’s own compression.
  • Ratios can change. Some guides say taller posts are now accepted; Instagram’s help page still states 4:5 as the tallest, so 4:5 is the safe choice.
  • Small sources stay soft when enlarged to 1080 wide.

Why this tool is different

Most Instagram resizers upload your photos to a server, and many apps add a watermark or ask for an account before you can save. This one runs completely in your browser: each photo is decoded by the browser, drawn onto a canvas of the exact Instagram size with high-quality smoothing, and saved by the browser’s own encoder. Your photos never leave your phone or computer, and the tool works offline after the page loads.

It is also built for real posting jobs: four exact sizes, a true no-crop option with your own border colour, up to 30 photos at once with one ZIP for carousels, and HEIC support for iPhones. Everything it does is described on this page, from the scale formula to the measured file sizes, so you can predict the result. Copy link with these settings under More options keeps your size and fit choice for next time, and Copy summary copies the before and after sizes.

What we measure

For each photo the tool reads its width and height after turning it upright, computes the scale and centred position, and after saving measures the new file size in bytes. The result line shows the size before and after and the pixel size.

What we do not do: we don’t detect faces or subjects for smart cropping, we don’t apply filters or edits, we don’t post to Instagram or connect to your account, and we don’t store or see your photos.

Frequently asked questions

What size image for Instagram?

Use 1080 pixels wide. Feed posts: 1080×1080 square, 1080×1350 portrait or 1080×566 landscape. Stories and Reels: 1080×1920.

What is the Instagram photo size ratio?

Instagram’s help page says feed photos keep their full resolution between 1.91:1 (landscape) and 4:5 (portrait), with 1:1 square in between. Stories and Reels are 9:16.

How to resize an image for Instagram without cropping?

Pick a size, then choose Fit inside (add border). The whole photo is placed in the frame and the empty space gets the border colour you choose.

What is the best Instagram image size?

Portrait 1080×1350 (4:5) for most photos, because it is the tallest feed shape and keeps 94% of a normal 3:4 phone photo when cropped.

What is the Instagram photo size in pixels?

1080 pixels wide; height 566 to 1350 pixels for feed posts and 1920 for Stories. Wider photos are reduced to 1080, narrower than 320 are enlarged.

What is the Instagram photo size in inches?

Instagram works in pixels, not inches. Only for printing: 1080 pixels is 3.6 inches at 300 dpi.

Why does Instagram crop my photo?

If a photo is taller than 4:5 or wider than 1.91:1, Instagram crops it to fit. Normal 3:4 and 9:16 phone photos are taller than 4:5, so resize them first.
