The right WhatsApp DP size is simply a square: a 1:1 photo that looks sharp when WhatsApp shows it as a small circle. WhatsApp does not publish an official DP size in pixels, so this WhatsApp DP size converter makes a 640×640 JPG, big enough to look crisp on any phone and small enough to upload in a moment. The real problem most people have is not the pixels but the shape. A phone photo is tall, so WhatsApp asks you to cut it into a square, and heads, feet or friends at the edge disappear. Here you can choose: crop the photo neatly, or keep the full photo as your DP without cropping by adding a border. Your photo is decoded in the browser, and phone photos are turned upright from their orientation tag, so a sideways selfie comes out straight. Then the tool draws it onto a blank 640×640 canvas:

Worked example (computed with the tool’s formula). Take a normal upright phone photo of 3000×4000 pixels (3:4). Fill and crop scales it by max(640 ÷ 3000, 640 ÷ 4000) = 0.213 to 640×853, and keeps the middle 640 rows: 75% of the photo. Fit inside scales it by 0.16 to 480×640 and adds 80 pixels of border on the left and right. Nothing is lost, but the photo is a little smaller inside the circle.

Fill and crop (centred) fills the square. Fit inside (add border) keeps the whole photo and adds a border in the colour you choose.

Why not a bigger file for “HD”? The DP is shown small, and WhatsApp may resize the photo again when you set it. A 640×640 image already has more detail than the circle on a phone screen can show, so a 4000-pixel original would not look sharper, only take longer to upload.
Two things hide parts of your photo: the square (if you crop) and the circle (always). The chart shows how much of the original photo you can actually see in the round DP for each choice. These numbers are computed from the tool’s formulas and the area of a circle inside a square.
So which should you pick? If you want your face big and clear, use Fill and crop. If you want the whole photo, use Fit inside: it is the honest answer to “how to set a full size photo in WhatsApp DP”.

When you choose Fit inside, a border colour picker appears. White and black look clean with most photos. A colour taken from your photo’s background (sky blue, wall grey) makes the border blend in so the DP looks like one picture. Because the DP is a circle, the border parts at the edges are partly hidden anyway; with a matching colour nobody notices them.
Drag the photo into the box on your computer, download the square JPG, then click your profile photo in WhatsApp Web, open your profile and upload it. Menu names can differ a little between app versions.
Making DPs for the whole family, or icons for several groups? Add up to 30 photos at once. All of them get the same fit and border, and Download all (ZIP) saves them in one file. A WhatsApp DP lives on screens, so only pixels matter. If you want to print it (for example on a card), 640 pixels is about 5.4 cm at 300 dpi or 21.7 cm at 75 dpi (pixels ÷ dpi × 2.54). The file size depends on the photo; we have not measured 640×640 DPs specifically, but as a rough guide our measured 1080×1080 Instagram square from a 672.9 KB phone photo was 157.9 KB, and 640×640 has about a third of those pixels.
Need the photo under an exact number of KB for a form instead? That is a different job: use the image compressor or compress image to 50 KB.
This tool draws your photo onto a new canvas and saves a fresh JPG, so the downloaded DP has none of the original’s camera data or GPS location. That is a side effect of resizing, not a full privacy check. If you want to send the original full-size photo to someone, for example as a document, and want its location removed first, use remove EXIF data, which shows what the file contains. You can also choose who sees your profile photo in WhatsApp’s privacy settings.
Most WhatsApp DP makers and apps upload your photo to a server or ask for gallery access, add their own logo, or show ads between steps. This one runs entirely in your browser. The photo is decoded by the browser, drawn onto a 640×640 canvas with high-quality smoothing and saved by the browser’s own JPG encoder. Your selfies and family photos never leave your phone, and the page works offline once it has loaded.
It also shows its working. The crop is a plain centred cut and the scale factor is the formula above, so you know before you tap what will stay and what will go. The chart on this page tells you how much of your photo the circle really shows, which is the part most guides skip. And there is no watermark, no sign-up and no app to install.
For each photo the tool reads its width and height after turning it upright, computes the scale and centred position for your fit choice, and after saving measures the new file size in bytes. The result line shows the size before and after and the pixel size, 640×640.
What we do not do: we don’t detect faces to place the crop, we don’t edit, beautify or add stickers, we don’t connect to WhatsApp, and we don’t store or see your photos.
