Turn M4A audio – like iPhone voice memos and DRM-free iTunes purchases – into MP3 that plays on any device. Your file is converted in the browser and never uploaded.
iPhone voice memos are saved as M4A. Convert them to MP3 so they open on Windows PCs, Android phones and older players.
Convert DRM-free M4A songs from iTunes or your own rips into MP3 for car stereos and devices that do not support M4A.
Recordings such as interviews, lectures or personal notes are converted locally. Nothing is uploaded to a server.
No sign-up, no watermark and no daily limit. Works in your browser on iPhone, Android, Windows and Mac.
This M4A to MP3 converter changes M4A audio files into MP3, the format that plays on practically every device. M4A is common on Apple devices: iPhone voice memos are saved as M4A, and songs bought from iTunes or Apple Music downloads often use it too. The trouble starts when you want to play that file somewhere else – an older car stereo, a basic MP3 player, a Windows program or a website that only accepts MP3. Converting M4A to MP3 fixes that.
The conversion runs in your browser on your own phone or computer. Your file is never uploaded, which matters when the recording is a private voice note, an interview or a lecture.

Voice memos are the most common reason people need to change M4A to MP3. Here is how to do it directly on your iPhone:
The MP3 opens on Windows PCs and Android phones without any special app, which makes it easy to send a recorded meeting, lecture or interview to someone who does not use an iPhone. You can do the same on a Mac: voice memos sync there too, so save a memo from the Voice Memos app as a file and drop it onto this page.
There is nothing to download. On Windows, open this page in Edge, Chrome or Firefox. On a Mac, use Safari, Chrome or Firefox. On Android, use Chrome. The steps are identical on every device. Phones convert more slowly than laptops because the work happens on the device, and very large files (roughly over 1.5 GB) may be slow or fail on phones – but typical M4A songs and memos are far smaller than that.
Only DRM-free M4A files can be converted. Songs bought from the iTunes Store in recent years are usually DRM-free and convert without problems, as do M4A files you created yourself, for example by ripping your own CDs. Older protected purchases and tracks downloaded through a music subscription are locked to their app, so the browser cannot read them and they cannot be converted here.
| M4A | MP3 | |
|---|---|---|
| Typical source | iPhone voice memos, iTunes, Apple devices | Almost everywhere |
| Compression | Lossy (AAC) or lossless (ALAC) | Lossy |
| Compatibility | Good on Apple, mixed elsewhere | Plays on practically every device |
M4A is simply an audio file in the MP4 family, usually holding AAC sound. AAC is efficient and sounds good, but not every player, car system or older program understands it. MP3 is older and slightly less efficient, yet it is still the format that works everywhere, which is why converting M4A to MP3 remains so popular.
Converting cannot add quality that was not in the source. A voice memo saved at 320 kbps will not sound better than at 128 kbps – it will just be a bigger file.
Want a ringtone from your converted song? Trim it to about 30 seconds with the MP3 cutter. For uncompressed recordings, use the WAV to MP3 converter. If your recording is a video instead of an audio file, the video to MP3 converter extracts the sound, andMOV to MP4 makes iPhone videos play on Windows and Android.
Please only convert audio you own or have the right to use.

Yes. Voice memos are M4A files. Save or share the memo to the Files app, open this page in Safari, choose the file and convert it to MP3.
Only DRM-free M4A files can be converted. Older protected purchases and songs from music subscription services are locked, so the browser cannot read them.
Both formats are compressed, so converting cannot add quality. Choose 192 or 320 kbps for music and 128 kbps for voice recordings to keep the sound close to the original.
This tool converts in one direction only, from M4A to MP3. MP3 is the more widely supported format, which is why most people convert that way.
