AVIF to PNG Converter - Convert .avif to PNG and Keep Transparency

Turn .avif logos, icons and cut-outs into PNG files that keep their transparent background. Free, and nothing is uploaded.

AVIF to PNG is what you need when the image has a transparent background. Websites now often serve logos, icons, stickers and product cut-outs as AVIF because the files are tiny. Once you save one, you might want to put it on a slide, a poster, a T-shirt mock-up or a video thumbnail, and that means the background must stay see-through. Converting to JPG would fill it with white. This AVIF to PNG converter keeps the transparency, keeps every decoded pixel and gives you a file almost every program accepts. It runs in your browser, so you can convert AVIF to PNG on Windows, Mac or a phone with up to 30 files at once. Below you will find how the converter works, how big the PNG will be, how to check that the transparency survived, and when PNG is not the best choice.

How does the AVIF to PNG converter work?

The page asks your browser’s built-in AVIF decoder to open the file. The decoded picture, including its transparency (the alpha channel), is drawn at full size onto an empty, see-through canvas. Unlike JPG output, nothing is painted behind it. The canvas is then saved as PNG, which is lossless: there is no quality setting, so the Quality slider disappears when PNG is selected. If the AVIF is animated, the first frame is used.

Worked example (measured and computed). In our own Chrome test, a 600 × 900 AVIF photo of 21.8 KB became a 100.1 KB JPG at 92% quality (measured). For PNG, the starting point is the raw picture: 600 × 900 pixels × 4 bytes (red, green, blue and transparency) = 2,160,000 bytes, about 2.16 MB (computed). PNG’s lossless compression makes the real file smaller than that, by how much depends on the picture. A busy photo stays big; a logo with large flat areas shrinks a lot. That is why PNG is ideal for graphics and heavy for photos.

How to use

  1. Add .avif images

Drag up to 30 AVIF files onto the box, click it to choose them, or paste a copied image with Ctrl+V.

  2. PNG is already set

PNG is lossless, so there is no quality slider. Under More options you can switch to JPG or WebP if you need to.

  3. Download the PNGs

Save each PNG with Download, or the whole batch with Download all (ZIP).

Why VidHaul

Transparency kept

See-through areas stay see-through, including soft edges and shadows, so a logo sits cleanly on any background.

Lossless copy

The decoded picture is stored exactly as PNG. You can edit it and save it again without adding new loss.

Opens in older software

PNG works in design tools, slide programs, editors and forms that don’t accept AVIF yet.

No upload, no sign-up

The AVIF to PNG converter uses your browser’s own decoder. Free, no watermark, no limit.

Does AVIF to PNG keep the transparent background?

Yes. PNG has stored transparency for decades, including partial transparency, so soft edges, drop shadows and glows stay smooth instead of getting a hard white rim. To check the result:

  • Don’t trust the thumbnail colour. Many viewers show transparent areas as white or black. That does not mean the background is filled.
  • Place it on colour. Put the PNG on a coloured slide or a dark document. If the colour shows through around the logo, the transparency is there.
  • Compare with JPG. Under More options, switch to JPG for a moment. In our own test with a transparent logo, the JPG’s see-through corners measured pure white (255, 255, 255). Switch back to PNG and the transparency returns.

Transparency only stays if it was there to begin with. A normal photo saved as AVIF has a background, and the PNG will too. This tool does not remove backgrounds.

How big will the PNG be?

AVIF is one of the most efficient image formats; PNG is designed to be exact, not small. The chart puts one real example side by side:

One 600 × 900 image in different formsAVIF21.8 KB (measured)JPG at 92%100.1 KB (measured)Raw picture2,160 KB (computed: 600 × 900 × 4 bytes)The PNG lands somewhere below the orange bar
AVIF and JPG sizes from our own Chrome test with this tool. The raw size is computed and is the ceiling PNG compresses from; we did not measure the PNG of this photo. Simple graphics end far below it, photos much closer.

For graphics, PNG can even beat JPG. In our own test, an 800 × 600 transparent PNG logo was 4.5 KB, and the same logo as JPG was 17.3 KB, almost four times bigger, with white corners. Flat colours and sharp edges are exactly what PNG compresses well.

If your PNG is a photo and it is too heavy, either keep it as JPG with AVIF to JPG, or make it smaller in pixels with the image resizer (choose PNG output there to keep the transparency).

How to convert AVIF to PNG on Windows, Mac and phones

The tool needs a browser that can read AVIF: Chrome 85 or newer, Firefox 93, Safari 16.1 or Edge 121, according to MDN. On a Windows PC, open the page in Chrome or Edge and drag the files from Downloads. On a Mac, any of Safari, Chrome or Firefox works; drag from Finder. On Android, use Chrome and tap the box. On an iPhone or iPad, use Safari on iOS 16 or newer and choose the file from Files. The PNG is saved to your normal downloads in every case. Converting many logos for a project? Drop them all at once and use Download all (ZIP).

How to save AVIF as PNG

There is usually no “Save as PNG” option in the browser: right-click, Save image as, gives you the AVIF the site sent. The quickest route is to save the AVIF, drop it here, and download the PNG. You can also copy an image and paste it into this page with Ctrl+V. Pasting hands over whatever your browser put on the clipboard, which is usually a PNG version already, and the tool then saves it as PNG again.

Tips for designers and students

  • Small source, small result. Converting adds no pixels. If a site served a 300 px wide logo, the PNG is also 300 px wide, and enlarging it a lot will look soft. Look for a bigger original if you need print size.
  • Exact size for a template. Resize the PNG with the image resizer; with Fit inside you can add a border colour of your choice instead of cropping.
  • Thumbnail with a logo. Combine your transparent PNG with a background image in your design app, then size the final picture with the YouTube thumbnail size tool.
  • Back to the web. When the design is done and it goes on a website, PNG to WebP shrinks it again and keeps the transparency.

How accurate is the AVIF to PNG converter?

  • The pixels are exact. Whatever the browser decodes is written to the PNG without loss, at the same width and height.
  • It can’t restore lost detail. The AVIF was already compressed by the website. PNG keeps what is there; it can’t add back what AVIF removed.
  • 8-bit, standard colour. AVIF can hold HDR and 10 or 12 bits per colour. The browser canvas saves 8 bits per colour in sRGB, so HDR images may look flatter.
  • Needs a current browser. There is no backup decoder. A browser that can’t read AVIF shows “This file couldn’t be read”.
  • First frame only. Animated AVIFs become one still PNG.

Why this tool is different

Typical online AVIF to PNG converters upload your image, convert it on a server and send back the PNG, which can be a hundred times larger than the AVIF you sent. This converter skips the server. Your browser already has an AVIF decoder, because it uses it to show images on websites. The page asks it to decode your file, draws the picture on a transparent canvas and saves a PNG with the browser’s own encoder, straight to your disk. Nothing travels over the internet, so there is no waiting for big downloads and nothing is stored anywhere. After the page has loaded it works offline.

It is also honest about what PNG costs. Each row shows the size before, the size after and the pixel size, and you can switch between PNG, JPG and WebP under More options to compare on your own files. Copy summary copies those numbers; Copy link with these settings saves your chosen output in a link.

What we measure

The tool measures the original file size, the decoded width and height, and the size of the PNG, and shows them in the list. The numbers on this page come from our own tests with this tool in Chrome in October and November 2026, or are computed from pixel counts where we say so.

What we do not do: we don’t remove backgrounds, sharpen, upscale or retouch, we don’t keep metadata, and we can’t create AVIF files. We don’t collect anything about the images you convert.

Frequently asked questions

How to convert AVIF to PNG?

Drop the .avif image into the box on this page. PNG is already selected, so the PNG is ready straight away; click Download or Download all (ZIP).

Does AVIF to PNG keep the transparent background?

Yes. PNG stores transparency, so transparent areas in the AVIF stay transparent, including soft half-transparent edges.

Is this AVIF to PNG converter free?

Yes. There is no cost, no sign-up and no watermark, and you can use it as often as you need.

How to save AVIF as PNG?

Saving from a website gives you the AVIF the site sent. Save it, drop it into this page and download the PNG it makes.

Why is the PNG file so much larger than the AVIF?

AVIF throws away detail you can’t easily see to stay tiny; PNG keeps every pixel. For photos the PNG can be many times bigger, for flat logos much less so.

How to convert .avif to PNG on my phone?

Open this page in Chrome on Android or Safari on iOS 16 or newer, tap the box and pick the file. The PNG goes to your downloads.

Can I convert PNG to AVIF here?

No. Browsers can read AVIF but not save it, so this tool converts AVIF to PNG, JPG or WebP only.
