Video to JPG Converter - Take a Screenshot from Video in Full Quality

Pause on the exact moment you want and save it as a sharp JPG or PNG at the full video resolution.

A video to JPG converter turns one moment of a video into a photo. Maybe you want a still of a birthday candle moment, a frame from a product demo for a slide, a whiteboard from a recorded class, or a cover image for a post. Pressing the screenshot keys works, but the picture is only as big as your screen and often has the player buttons on top. This tool takes the screenshot from video by decoding the frame straight from the file, so you get a clean, high quality image at the video’s full resolution. You can convert video to JPG, or to lossless PNG, online and free. Nothing is uploaded and nothing is installed, so it works the same on a laptop, Android phone or iPhone.

How does the video to JPG converter work?

When you choose a file, a preview player opens it. The Time box holds the moment to capture, in seconds. Use current time copies the player’s position into that box, rounded to one decimal place (for example 12.47 s becomes 12.5). When you press Start, the tool opens the video track with the Mediabunny library and asks the browser’s own video decoder (WebCodecs) for the frame that is on screen at that time. That frame is drawn at the full size of the video onto a canvas, and the canvas is saved as JPG at quality 0.92 (on a scale of 0 to 1) or as PNG, which is lossless. Times past the end are held to just before the end, so you always get a real frame.

Measured result from our own test: on a 4-second test clip whose brightness rises steadily, a capture at 0.5 s and one at 3.5 s gave clearly different frames (red value 33 versus 242). The capture follows the time you set, not a random nearby key frame.

How to use

  1. Choose your video

Click the box above or drag a video file onto it. A preview player appears under the file name.

  2. Find the moment

Play or drag the player to the frame you want and press Use current time, or type the second into the Time box.

  3. Start and download

Press Start, then Download. The image is saved with -frame at the end of the name.

Why VidHaul

Exact time capture

The frame is decoded from the file at the time you set, not copied from your screen, so you get the moment you chose.

Full resolution

The image has the same width and height as the video: a 1080p clip gives 1920×1080 and a 4K clip gives 3840×2160.

JPG or PNG

JPG is the default and small enough to share. PNG, under More options, is lossless for editing and printing.

No upload, no watermark

Everything runs in your browser. No sign-up, no logo on the image and no limit on how many screenshots you save.

  1. Choose your video. Click the box at the top or drag and drop the file. The name, size and a preview player appear. Use Change file to swap it.
  2. Find the moment. Play and pause, or drag the player’s slider. Press Use current time and the Time box fills in. You can also type a value, for example 12.5 for twelve and a half seconds.
  3. Choose the format (optional). JPG is the default. Open More options to pick PNG under Output format.
  4. Press Start and Download. The result shows the size before and after, and Copy summary copies that line. To grab another moment, set a new time and press Start again.

Why this beats a normal screenshot

A screenshot from your device captures what is on the screen, not what is in the file. That causes three common problems:

  • The size depends on the player window, so a 4K video viewed in a small window gives a small, soft picture.
  • Play buttons, the progress line, subtitles or notifications can end up in the shot.
  • On phones you usually need to crop the result afterwards.

Decoding the frame from the file avoids all of that. The table shows the image size you get for common video sizes.

How to get a high quality screenshot from video

  • Choose a still moment. Each frame is exposed for a short time, so fast movement looks blurred in a single frame. A moment where the person or camera is steady gives the clearest picture.
  • Try nearby times. If the first frame looks soft, type times like 8.2, 8.3 and 8.4 and compare. Each 0.1 s step moves 2 to 6 frames, depending on the frame rate (see the chart below).
  • Use the original file. Videos sent through chat apps are usually compressed again. The original from your camera or gallery gives a sharper still.
  • PNG for editing and printing. PNG keeps every decoded pixel. JPG at quality 0.92 is very close and much smaller, which is fine for sharing.
Frames passed in each 0.1 s step of the Time box24 fps (film)2.425 fps2.530 fps (phones)350 fps560 fps6
Computed from the settings the tool uses: Use current time rounds to 0.1 s, so frames per step = frame rate × 0.1.

JPG or PNG: which should you choose?

Both formats keep the full resolution. The only difference is how the pixels are stored.

How to convert an MP4 video to JPG images

This page saves one image per run, which suits picking the one perfect moment. If you want many images from one MP4, for example one every second, use video to frames, which returns a ZIP of numbered JPG or PNG files. For the final frame of a clip, the last frame extractor does it in one click.

Screenshot from a YouTube video

The tool reads video files on your device, not links. It cannot open YouTube, Udemy or streaming videos. For your own uploads, use the original file you uploaded. Only capture videos you own or have the right to use.

FFmpeg get screenshot from video

With FFmpeg installed, a single frame at 12.5 seconds can be saved with ffmpeg -ss 12.5 -i input.mp4 -frames:v 1 frame.jpg. This page gives the same kind of exact-time still with a player to find the moment, and needs no installation.

How accurate is the video to JPG converter?

  • Timing: the frame shown at the time in the box is captured. Use current time rounds to 0.1 s, so if you paused at 8.27 s the box says 8.3 and the frame may be 1 or 2 frames later than what you saw. To get the exact paused frame, check the result and adjust the time by 0.1.
  • Sharpness: it can only be as sharp as the video. Upscaling, de-blurring and AI enhance are not done.
  • Colour: the browser decodes the colours. HDR videos from recent phones are shown as the browser converts them and may look flatter than in your gallery.
  • Codecs: if your browser cannot decode the video (some HEVC files on Windows or Linux), the page says so instead of making a broken image.
  • Large files: files over about 1.5 GB trigger a warning and may be slow on phones.

Why this tool is different

Many online video to JPG converters ask you to upload the whole video just to get one picture back. A 500 MB phone video on mobile data can take many minutes to upload, and your personal footage then sits on a server. VidHaul does the work in your browser. The page loads the tool code, the video is read from your own disk, the browser’s own decoder produces the frame, and the image file is created on your device. The video itself never travels over the network, so a big file costs no upload time or mobile data.

The second difference is control. Instead of guessing a time and hoping, you get a real video player next to the Time box, and Use current time copies the position for you. And because the picture comes from the decoded frame, there are no player controls, no screen scaling and no crop needed.

What we measure

The result box shows the size of your original video and the size of the image you are about to download. The image has the video’s full resolution. The settings are fixed and simple: JPG quality 0.92, or lossless PNG. What we do not do: we do not resize, sharpen, filter or watermark the image, and we do not keep a copy. The saved image is a plain still of the frame with no EXIF data such as location or camera details added.
