YouTube Banner Size Converter: Channel Art for All Devices

Resize any image to YouTube banner size, 2560×1440 or the 2048×1152 minimum, cropped or with a border. Nothing is uploaded.

The YouTube banner size to use is 2560×1440 pixels (16:9), with 2048×1152 as the smallest YouTube accepts and 6 MB as the largest file. The banner, also called channel art, is the wide image across the top of your channel. The tricky part is not the size itself but the fact that YouTube shows a different part of the same image on a TV, a computer and a phone. Only a small box in the middle is shown everywhere. This YouTube banner size converter gives you both correct sizes with one tap and keeps the centre of your picture in the centre. Below you find the exact numbers from YouTube’s help page, a drawing of the safe area to scale, what to do with an old 1024×576 banner, and how the tool decides what to crop.

How does the YouTube banner converter work?

Your image is decoded in the browser and phone photos are turned upright from their orientation tag. Then the tool draws it onto a blank canvas of exactly 2560×1440 (or 2048×1152, if you tap the minimum size):

  • Fill and crop (centred) scales the image by the larger of banner width ÷ image width and banner height ÷ image height, so it covers the canvas, and trims the overflow evenly from both sides.
  • Fit inside (add border) scales it by the smaller of the two, so all of it fits, centres it, and fills the rest with your border colour.

The canvas is saved as JPG at 92% quality, or as PNG or WebP if you change the format under More options. The file is named like banner-2560x1440.jpg.

Worked example (computed with the tool’s formula). An old 1024×576 banner and the 2560×1440 size have the same 16:9 shape, so Fill and crop scales it by max(2560 ÷ 1024, 1440 ÷ 576) = 2.5 and cuts nothing. Every pixel is stretched evenly to 2.5 times its size: the layout stays the same, but fine text gets softer. A 3000×4000 upright phone photo is different: it is scaled by max(0.853, 0.36) = 0.853 to 2560×3413, and only the middle 1440 rows stay, about 42% of the photo.

How to use

YouTube banner size requirements

YouTube banner image requirements. Minimum, safe area at minimum and file size from YouTube Help; the 2560×1440 figures are scaled from those.

Why do many guides say 1546×423? Scale YouTube’s 1235×338 safe area by 2560 ÷ 2048 = 1.25 and you get about 1544×423. The widely used 1546×423 is the same box, rounded. Either way the rule is the same: the safe area is only about 18% of the whole banner.

Drawn at 1 pixel per 5 banner pixels from YouTube’s numbers (1235×338 at 2048×1152, scaled to 2560×1440). The grey strip shows the idea of the wide desktop view; its exact height depends on the screen. Computed, not measured.

YouTube banner size for all devices and for mobile

You upload one banner for all devices. YouTube then shows a different slice of it:

  • TV: the whole image can be shown.
  • Computer: a wide, thin strip from the middle, as wide as the image.
  • Phone and tablet: an even narrower piece of that strip, close to the safe area.

So the honest answer to “YouTube banner size for mobile” is: the same 2560×1440 file, with everything important inside the centre safe area. Fill the rest with a background colour, a pattern or a photo that can be cut off without losing meaning. In YouTube Studio you also see a preview and can adjust the crop when you upload.

How to resize an image to YouTube banner size

  1. Add the image. Drop it, click to choose it, or paste it with Ctrl+V.
  2. Pick the size. YouTube banner 2560×1440 is selected first. Tap Minimum banner 2048×1152 only if you want a lighter file; it shows the same on most screens.
  3. Pick the fit. Fill and crop for photos and full-bleed designs, Fit inside for a logo or poster that must stay whole. With Fit inside a border colour picker appears; match it to your design’s background so the border disappears.
  4. Download. The result line shows the size before and after and the pixels, so you can check the 6 MB limit at once. Then upload in YouTube Studio.

YouTube banner size 1024x576: can I still use it?

Older templates and tutorials give 1024×576 as the YouTube banner size. That is now too small: YouTube’s minimum is 2048×1152, exactly twice as wide and twice as tall. The good news is that 1024×576 is already 16:9, so this tool works as a YouTube banner size 1024x576 converter online without cutting anything:

What happens to a 1024×576 banner. Computed from the tool’s scaling formula.
Output sizeScaleCropped awayResult
2048×1152 (minimum)2×NothingAccepted, a little soft
2560×14402.5×NothingAccepted, a little softer

Enlarging cannot add real detail, so thin text and small logos may look blurry on a TV. If you still have the original design (Canva, Photoshop, PowerPoint), export it again at 2560×1440 for the sharpest result. If not, the converted file is a perfectly good stopgap. A “1024x576 for mobile” banner does not exist; mobile uses the centre of the same file.

Using a photo as your banner

A normal photo is a very different shape from a banner. The table shows how much of common photo shapes survives Fill and crop to 16:9. With Fit inside, the same percentage is how much of the banner your photo covers; the rest is border.

Share of a photo kept when cropped to the 16:9 banner. Computed from the crop formula the tool uses.

Remember that only the middle strip is safe. Even a 16:9 photo that keeps 100% will show only its centre on phones. A landscape photo with the subject in the middle works best. A square logo is usually better with Fit inside on a matching background colour than cropped.

YouTube banner size PNG or JPG?

The tool saves JPG at 92% by default. JPG is right for photos and gradients and stays light. Open More options to choose PNG, which keeps flat colours, logos and small text perfectly crisp. PNG files of photos can get large, so look at the size on the result line; if it is near 6 MB, use JPG or lower the Quality slider. WebP is offered as well, but for the upload JPG or PNG is the safe choice.

How big will a JPG banner be? We have not measured banners specifically. As a rough guide, 2560×1440 has 4 times the pixels of a 1280×720 thumbnail, and our measured 1280×720 JPG thumbnails from a photo were about 90 to 110 KB, so a JPG banner from a similar photo should be far under 6 MB.

Banner design tips

  • While designing, draw a guide box of 1546×423 in the centre of a 2560×1440 canvas and keep every word inside it.
  • Use big, simple lettering. On a phone the banner is a thin strip only a few centimetres high.
  • Leave a little space inside the safe area edges; buttons and the profile picture can sit close to it on some screens.
  • Use colours that match your YouTube thumbnail style so the channel looks consistent.
  • Need a background picture from your own video? Grab a frame with video to JPG, then drop it here.

Banner rejected or looks blurry?

  • “Image too small”: the file is under 2048×1152. Resize it here.
  • File over 6 MB: choose JPG, lower the quality, or use the image compressor with a 1 MB or 5 MB target.
  • Wrong format: HEIC, AVIF or WebP files may be refused. The JPG or PNG from this page works. To only change the format, see HEIC to JPG or WebP to PNG.
  • Blurry text: the source was too small. Re-export the design at 2560×1440 instead of enlarging an old file.

How accurate is this YouTube banner size tool?

The output is exactly 2560×1440 or 2048×1152 pixels every time, because the tool draws onto a canvas of that exact size. Limits to know:

  • The crop is always centred. You cannot drag it. If your subject is off-centre, crop the image first in another app or use Fit inside.
  • It does not draw the safe area for you. The tool resizes; it does not check where your text is. Use the numbers above.
  • Upscaling is soft. A 1024×576 file meets the rule after resizing but cannot become as sharp as a real 2560×1440 export.
  • File size varies with the picture. Busy photos give larger JPGs than flat designs.
  • YouTube can change its rules. We checked YouTube Help in November 2026; if an upload fails, read the current page.

Why this tool is different

Typical banner resizers and makers upload your image to their server first. This one works entirely in your browser: the image is decoded by the browser, drawn onto a canvas of the exact banner size with high-quality smoothing, and saved by the browser’s own encoder. Your channel art and photos never leave your device, and after the page has loaded it works offline.

There are no templates, stickers or “auto design” here, and that is on purpose: the tool does one job and tells you exactly how. The scale factor and the centred crop are the simple formulas on this page, so you can predict the result. It also handles what most people actually have, such as an old 1024×576 banner, an iPhone HEIC photo or a square logo, and up to 30 images at once with a ZIP download. Copy link with these settings, under More options, keeps your size and fit choice in a link.

What we measure

For each image the tool reads its width and height after turning it upright, computes the scale and the centred position, and after saving it measures the new file size in bytes. The result line shows the size before and after and the pixel size; Copy summary copies that text.

What we do not do: we don’t detect faces or text, we don’t check whether your design fits the safe area, we don’t add or move any elements, and we don’t contact YouTube. We don’t store your images or collect data about them.
