Remove Audio from Video - Mute Video Online Free

Remove the sound track from any video in your browser. The picture stays the same and nothing is uploaded.

If you are searching how to remove audio from video, the quickest answer is right above: choose a file, press Start and download a silent copy. This mute video online tool takes the sound track out of the file itself, so the clip plays silently everywhere you send it, not just on your own screen. You can remove audio from video online free, with no app, no account and no watermark, and the file never leaves your device. People use it to mute video sound before posting a clip with private talk in the background, to strip a copyrighted song, to clear wind and traffic noise before adding music, or to make a quiet background clip for a website or slide. It works on iPhone, Android, Windows and Mac in a current browser.

How does the mute video tool work?

A video file is a container that holds separate streams: one for the picture and one (or more) for the sound. The tool opens the container in your browser with the Mediabunny library, marks the audio track as discarded, and writes a new file with only the picture. If the picture already uses the codec of the format you chose (H.264 for MP4, MOV and MKV, VP9 for WebM), the compressed video data is copied straight across without re-encoding. That is why it is fast and why the frames are bit for bit the same. If the codec does not match, the picture is re-encoded into the right codec first, which takes longer.

Worked example, computed with the usual size formula (bitrate × seconds ÷ 8): a 60-second phone clip with a 128 kbps AAC sound track carries 128,000 × 60 ÷ 8 = 960,000 bytes of audio. Muting it makes the file about 0.96 MB smaller. The picture is usually far bigger than that, so the muted file is only a little lighter. In our own test, a 10-second 1280×720 H.264 MP4 at about 4,111 kbps was read by our metadata viewer as almost all video (4,109 kbps), which is typical.

How to use

  1. Choose your video

Click the box above or drag a video file onto it. You will see its name, size and resolution.

  2. Press Start

The sound track is removed on your device. For most phone clips this takes a few seconds.

Click Download to save the file, which ends in -muted. Press Convert another file to do the next one.

Why VidHaul

Fast, no quality loss

When the video can be copied as it is, the picture is not re-encoded, so muting is quick and every frame looks exactly the same.

Sound fully removed

The audio track is left out of the new file completely, not turned down, so nothing can be heard even at full volume.

MP4, MOV, MKV or WebM

MP4 is the default and plays on every phone and computer. Other formats are under More options.

No upload, no watermark

Everything happens in your browser. No account, no logo on your video and no limit on how many files you mute.

Remove audio from video online free, step by step

  1. Choose your video. Click the box at the top of the page or drag the file onto it. Use Change file if you picked the wrong one.
  2. Pick a format (optional). Open More options to change the Output format. MP4 is selected by default. MOV, MKV and WebM are shown if your browser can create them.
  3. Press Start. A progress bar shows how far it has got. You can press Cancel at any time.
  4. Download. The size before and after is shown. Click Download, or Copy summary to paste the result line somewhere.

How much smaller is a muted video?

Removing sound saves exactly the space the audio used, and no more. The chart shows how big a share of the file a 128 kbps sound track is at different video bitrates. A small, low quality video gains the most. A sharp 1080p or 4K phone video barely changes.

Space freed by muting (128 kbps audio)Video 1,000 kbps11.3%Video 2,000 kbps6.0%Video 4,000 kbps3.1%Video 8,000 kbps1.6%Video 16,000 kbps0.8%
Computed: audio share = 128 ÷ (video kbps + 128). 128 kbps is the audio bitrate VidHaul’s own video tools use when they re-encode sound. Not a measurement of any single file.
Audio bitrate in the originalSpace freed per minute of video
96 kbps0.72 MB
128 kbps0.96 MB
192 kbps1.44 MB
256 kbps1.92 MB

If you need a much smaller file, muting is not the right tool. Use the video compressor, which lowers the video bitrate itself.

How to remove audio from iPhone video

You do not need to install an app. Open this page in Safari or Chrome on your iPhone, tap the box and choose Photo Library or Browse to pick the video. Press Start and then Download. Safari saves the file to the Downloads folder in the Files app; from there you can share it or save it to Photos.

Why iPhone videos can take longer

Many iPhones record in HEVC (H.265). MP4, MOV and MKV output from this tool use H.264, so an HEVC picture is re-encoded rather than copied. That takes more time and depends on your browser being able to decode HEVC. Safari on iPhone and Mac can. Some browsers on Windows or Linux cannot, and the page then shows a message that the video uses a format your browser cannot open. If that happens, try Safari, or the latest Chrome or Edge on a computer.

How to mute a video on Android

Open this page in Chrome, tap the box and pick the clip from your gallery or files. Press Start and Download. Android saves it to your Downloads folder, and the gallery usually shows it within a few seconds. Most Android cameras record H.264, so muting is a fast copy with no quality change. Phones have less memory than computers, so very large files (the page warns above about 1.5 GB) are better done on a laptop.

How to remove audio from video on PC or Mac

On Windows, Mac or Linux, open this page in a current Chrome, Edge, Firefox or Safari and drag the video onto the box. There is nothing to install and the file is processed in your browser’s memory. A computer is the best place for long recordings and big 4K files.

Mute video sound for WhatsApp status, Instagram and TikTok

Social apps often let you turn sound down while editing a post, but that only applies inside that app. If you want a file that is silent everywhere, mute it here first and then post the MP4. This is handy when a clip has someone talking in the background or a song you do not have the rights to. If you want new music on the silent clip, add it next with add music to video.

Muting a video vs turning the volume down

The mute button in a video player only silences playback on your screen. As soon as you send the file to someone, they hear everything. Removing audio from the video file is different: the new file has no sound track at all. There is nothing left to turn up, which is what you want when the sound contains a private conversation.

Can I remove only background noise and keep voices?

No. This tool removes the whole sound track, not parts of it. Keeping a voice while removing wind, hum or crowd noise is noise reduction, which needs an audio editor. If you only need the voice or the sound as a separate file, save it with video to MP3.

FFmpeg remove audio from video command

If you are comfortable with the command line, FFmpeg does the same job. The -an option tells FFmpeg not to include any audio stream in the output, and -c copy copies the video without re-encoding:

ffmpeg -i input.mp4 -c copy -an output.mp4

This page gives you the same copy-without-re-encoding result without installing anything, which helps on a phone or a work laptop where you cannot add software.

How accurate is muting? Limits to know

  • Picture quality: identical when the video is copied (for example H.264 into MP4, MOV or MKV, or VP9 into WebM). When it is re-encoded (HEVC or AV1 sources, or a format change such as H.264 to WebM), a small quality change is possible and it takes longer.
  • All audio goes: every sound track is left out. You cannot keep one language track and drop another.
  • Codec support: the tool can only read what your browser can decode. If it cannot, you see a clear message instead of a broken file.
  • Size: the file only shrinks by the size of the audio, often 1% to 10%.
  • Memory: the new file is built in your device’s memory, so files over about 1.5 GB may be slow or fail on phones.

Why this tool is different

Most online ways to mute a video send the whole file to a server, remove the sound there and make you download it again. For a big phone video on mobile data that is slow, and it means a copy of your clip, including the sound you wanted to hide, sits on someone else’s computer for a while. VidHaul does the work in your browser. The page loads the code once, and then the video is read from your own disk, the audio track is dropped, and the new file is written in memory on your device.

The second difference is that it tries to copy instead of re-encode. Many tools re-encode every video, which costs time and a little quality each time. Here, when the picture codec already fits the output format, the compressed video data is copied unchanged. You can check this yourself: open the muted file in our video metadata viewer and you will see the same codec, resolution and frame rate as the original, with no audio rows.

What we measure

The result box shows the file size before and after, so you can see exactly how much space the sound track used. The output name ends in -muted so it never overwrites your original. What we do not do: we do not analyse or keep your video, we do not add a watermark, and we do not lower the video bitrate. If you want the file smaller, that is the compressor’s job. If you want the picture to change size, use resize video or the video cropper.

Frequently asked questions

How to remove audio from a video?

Open this page, choose the video and press Start. When it finishes, click Download. The new file has the same picture and no sound track.

How can I remove audio from a video on my iPhone?

Open this page in Safari or Chrome, tap the box and choose the video from Photos or Files. Press Start, then save the silent video to Files or Photos.

How to remove audio from video on Android?

Open this page in Chrome, pick the video from your gallery or files and press Start. The downloaded video plays without sound in any app.

How to remove audio from video without watermark?

Use this tool. It is free, needs no sign-up and never adds a watermark or logo to your video.

Does muting a video reduce its quality?

Not when the picture can be copied, which is the case for a normal H.264 MP4 saved as MP4, MOV or MKV. If the picture has to be re-encoded, for example an HEVC iPhone video, there can be a very small change.

How to remove background audio from video and keep the voice?

This tool cannot do that. It removes the whole sound track. Separating voice from background noise needs an audio editor with noise reduction.

How to mute a video before uploading to YouTube?

Mute the file here first, then upload the silent MP4 to YouTube like any other video. The uploaded video will have no sound at all.

Is my video uploaded to a server?

No. Muting happens in your browser, so the video never leaves your phone or computer.
