Sometimes a video is the wrong size. A 4K phone recording is too heavy to send, a landscape clip looks tiny as a Reel, or a website asks for 720p. This tool lets you resize video online in two ways: lower or raise the resolution while keeping the shape, or fit the video into an exact frame for social media. It works as a free video resizer online in Chrome, Edge, Safari and Firefox, on a computer or a phone. You can resize video online free, with no watermark and no account, and the file is never uploaded: all the work happens in your browser, on your own device. If you mainly need a smaller file in MB rather than a new resolution, the video compressor is the better tool, and this page explains the difference below.
How does resize video work?
The tool decodes every frame, scales it to the new size and encodes it again (H.264 for MP4, MOV and MKV, VP9 for WebM) at a balanced quality setting. The sound is kept. There are two kinds of size:
Keep shape (1080p, 720p, 480p, 360p). The number is the short side. The long side is worked out from your video’s own shape and rounded to an even number, because video encoders need even sizes. Formula: new long side = old long side × (new short side ÷ old short side).
Fixed frame (1:1, 4:5, 9:16, 16:9). The output has exactly that width and height. Your video is scaled to fit completely inside, keeping its shape, and the spare space is black.
Worked example: in our own test (24 October 2026, Chrome on a desktop) the 9:16 story option produced a video of exactly 1080×1920. Computed with the keep-shape formula, a 1920×1080 video at 480p becomes 1920 × 480 ÷ 1080 = 853.3, rounded to the even number 854, so 854×480.
How to use
Choose your video
Click the box or drag the file onto it. You see the file name, size and a preview.
Pick a size
720p is selected by default. Choose 1080p, 480p or 360p to keep the shape, or a 1:1, 4:5, 9:16 or 16:9 frame.
Press Start
A progress bar shows how far it has got. MP4 is the default; open More options to pick MOV, MKV or WebM.
Download
Click Download to save the resized video. The result card shows the size before and after.
Why VidHaul
Change resolution
Scale your video to 1080p, 720p, 480p or 360p. The shape of the video stays the same, so nothing is stretched.
Social media frames
Fit any video into 1:1 (1080×1080), 4:5 (1080×1350), 9:16 (1080×1920) or 16:9 (1920×1080).
Nothing cut off
With the frame sizes the whole video is fitted inside and the spare space is filled with black bars. Your picture is never cropped.
No upload, no watermark
Resizing happens in your browser on your own device. No sign-up, no watermark and no limit.
How to resize video
Click the box at the top of the page or drag your video onto it.
Open the Size list. 720p is selected; pick another resolution or one of the frames.
If you need MOV, MKV or WebM instead of MP4, open More options.
Press Start, wait for the progress bar, then click Download.
Change video resolution and keep the shape
The 1080p, 720p, 480p and 360p options change the resolution without stretching or black bars. The table shows what you get for three common video shapes, computed from the formula above.

Fewer pixels means less work for the encoder and, usually, a smaller file. The chart shows how much of the 1080p picture is left at each option.
Pixels per frame for a 16:9 video at each keep-shape option (1920×1080, 1280×720, 854×480, 640×360), in millions of pixels. Computed from the settings the tool uses.
Resize video for Instagram, TikTok and YouTube Shorts
Apps often crop or zoom a video that does not match their frame, which can cut off faces or text. Resizing to the right frame first means you decide how it looks. The frame options give an exact size and fit your whole video inside. The table shows how much of the frame your picture fills; the rest is black bars.

Fill percentages are computed from the fit-inside rule the tool uses. If you would rather fill the frame and lose a little of the edges instead of having bars, use the video cropper.
Resize video for Instagram
For a portrait feed post, 4:5 1080×1350 takes up the most room on screen. For a square post use 1:1, and for Reels and Stories use 9:16 1080×1920.
Resize video for TikTok
Choose 9:16 1080×1920. A vertical phone video fills it completely. A landscape clip sits in the middle with bars above and below; to fill the screen instead, crop it to 9:16 with the video cropper.
Resize video for YouTube Shorts
YouTube Help says Shorts need a square or vertical aspect ratio, so a landscape clip does not meet that rule as it is. Choose 9:16 1080×1920 (or 1:1) to put it in a vertical or square frame.
Video resizer in MB or KB: resize vs. compress
Many people search for a video resizer in MB or KB when they really want a smaller file. Resizing changes the number of pixels. A lower resolution usually means a smaller file, but the exact MB size depends on the video, and this tool cannot aim for a size. The video compressor lets you pick a target size in MB, for example for WhatsApp, email or Discord. A good order is: resize to 720p here, then compress if it is still too big.
How to resize video without cropping
Every option on this page keeps the whole picture. The keep-shape options do not change the shape at all, and the frame options add black bars rather than cut. Nothing is ever trimmed from the edges. If you want the opposite, a full frame with the edges cut, that is cropping, and the video cropper does it.
Resize video without losing quality
Scaling down (1080p to 720p) keeps the video sharp on phone screens and makes it lighter.
Scaling up (480p to 1080p) is possible, but it cannot add detail that was not there, so the result may look soft.
Every resize re-encodes, so it is never a bit-for-bit copy. Resize once from the original, not again and again from earlier results.
How to resize video on iPhone, Android and Windows
On iPhone, open this page in Safari or Chrome, tap the file box and pick the video from your photo library or the Files app. The result goes to Downloads in Files. On Android, open it in Chrome and pick the video from your gallery; the result goes to your Downloads folder. On Windows or Mac, use any current browser and drag the file in. Use a computer for long or 4K videos; it is much faster than a phone, and files over about 1.5 GB may be slow or fail on phones.
How accurate is resize video?
The output size is exact: the 9:16 option gave 1080×1920 in our test, and the keep-shape options follow the formula, with the long side rounded to an even number. Honest limits:
It re-encodes at a balanced quality setting, so file size and quality change slightly even at the same resolution.
Upscaling is allowed. If your video is 480p and you pick 1080p, it is made bigger, with no new detail.
Black bars only. The frame options cannot fill the bars with a blurred copy or a colour; they are always black.
No custom sizes. You can only pick the eight sizes in the list.
Sideways clips. The tool does not turn the picture. If a clip looks sideways in the preview, fix it first with rotate video, then resize.
Why this tool is different
Most online video resizers upload your file to their server, resize it there and send it back, often with a size limit, a sign-up or a watermark on the free plan. VidHaul uses the WebCodecs API, the video engine built into modern browsers, to decode, scale and encode the video on your own device. Nothing is uploaded, and once you have pressed Start the work keeps going even without an internet connection.
The sizes are not guesses. The keep-shape options always use your video’s own shape and even pixel sizes, and the frame options always fit the whole picture, so you can work out the result in advance from the tables on this page. The tool does only this job: it does not crop, change the speed or alter the colours.
What we measure
We test with real files in a real browser. For resize video we check that the output has exactly the size the option promises: the 9:16 story option gave 1080×1920. The resolution table, the fill table and the pixel chart are not measurements; they are computed from the settings the code uses.
What we do not measure: we do not score visual quality and we do not predict the output file size, because it depends on the content of your video. The result card shows the size before and after, and Copy summary copies it for your notes.

Frequently asked questions
How to resize a video?
Choose your video on this page, pick a size such as 720p or 9:16, and press Start. When it finishes, click Download to save the resized video.
How to resize video for Instagram?
Pick 4:5 1080×1350 for portrait feed posts, 1:1 1080×1080 for square posts, or 9:16 1080×1920 for Reels and Stories. The video is fitted inside that frame with black bars where needed.
How to resize video for TikTok or YouTube Shorts?
Choose 9:16 1080×1920. A vertical phone video fills the frame; a landscape video is placed in the middle with black bars above and below.
How to resize video without cropping?
Use one of the frame sizes. They always fit the whole picture inside and add black bars instead of cutting anything off. For a filled frame with the edges cut, use the video cropper.
How to resize video MB size?
Lowering the resolution, for example from 1080p to 480p, usually makes the file smaller, but the exact MB size depends on the video. For a target size in MB, use the video compressor.
How can I resize a video without losing quality?
Making a video smaller (1080p to 720p) keeps it looking sharp on phones. Making a small video bigger cannot add detail, so it may look soft. Any resize re-encodes, so it is never a perfect copy.
What does keep shape mean for 1080p, 720p, 480p and 360p?
The video keeps its own width-to-height ratio. A 16:9 video set to 720p becomes 1280×720, and a vertical 9:16 video becomes 720×1280.
Is this video resizer free?
Yes. It is free with no sign-up and no watermark, and your video is never uploaded.
