It happens to everyone. You record holding the phone the wrong way, or the phone does not notice that you turned it, and the clip plays sideways. Or you filmed with the phone upside down and only notice later. This tool lets you rotate video online in a minute: turn it a quarter turn right or left, turn it upside down, or flip video horizontally like a mirror, and download a fixed file. You can rotate video online free on a computer or phone, in Chrome, Edge, Safari or Firefox, with no account and no watermark. The video is never uploaded, because the rotating happens in your browser on your own device. Below you will find which rotation to pick, how to flip a selfie video, and how to rotate a video on Android, iPhone, Windows and in programs like VLC and Premiere Pro.
How does rotate video work?
Phones often do not turn the pixels when you record sideways. They save the picture as the sensor saw it and add a small rotation note to the file that tells players how to show it. Some apps read that note, some ignore it, which is why a clip can look right on your phone and sideways somewhere else.
This tool does not just change that note. It decodes every frame, turns it by the angle you pick (clockwise, on top of any rotation the file already says it has), flips it left to right if you tick Mirror, and encodes it again (H.264 for MP4, MOV and MKV, VP9 for WebM) with no rotation note at all. The result looks the same in every player. The sound is kept.
Worked example (our own test, 24 October 2026, Chrome on a desktop): a 1280×720 landscape video rotated 90° right came out as 720×1280, a vertical video with the width and height swapped, as expected for a quarter turn.
How to use
Choose your video
Click the box or drag the sideways or upside-down video onto it. The preview shows which way it is turned.
Pick the rotation
Choose 90° right (default), 90° left, 180° or No rotation. Tick Mirror (flip horizontally) to flip it as well.
Press Start
A progress bar shows how far it has got. MP4 is the default; open More options to pick MOV, MKV or WebM.
Download
Click Download to save the fixed video, or Convert another file to do the next one.
Why VidHaul
90°, 180° and mirror
Turn the picture a quarter turn right or left, turn it upside down, or flip it horizontally. You can combine a rotation with the mirror in one go.
Sound kept
Only the picture is turned. The original sound stays in the video.
Right way up everywhere
The pixels themselves are turned, so the video shows the right way up on phones, computers, TVs, WhatsApp and social media.
No upload, no watermark
Everything runs in your browser on your own device. No sign-up, no watermark and no limit on how many videos you rotate.
How to rotate video
Click the box at the top of the page or drag the video onto it. Check the preview to see which way it is turned.
Open the Rotate list and choose 90° right, 90° left, 180° or No rotation.
Tick Mirror (flip horizontally) if you also want a mirror image.
If you need MOV, MKV or WebM instead of MP4, open More options.
Press Start. You can Cancel at any time. When it is done, click Download.
Which rotation do you need?
Look at the preview and find where the top of the picture is, for example where people’s heads or the sky are:

If you get it wrong, no harm done: your original file is not changed. Choose the file again and pick the other direction.
Output frame shape for each option on a 1280×720 video. The 90° right result (720×1280) is our measured test; the others are computed from the settings the tool uses (a quarter turn swaps width and height, 180° and mirror keep them).
How to flip a video horizontally (mirror)
Flipping is different from rotating. The mirror option swaps the picture left to right. This is handy when the front camera saved a selfie video mirrored, so writing on a T-shirt or a sign reads backwards. It is also used for creative edits, or to make a dance or workout video easier to follow by matching the viewer’s left and right.
To flip only, set Rotate to No rotation and tick Mirror (flip horizontally). You can also combine the two in a single pass; the tool turns the picture first and then mirrors it. There is no separate vertical flip, but a vertical flip is the same as 180° plus Mirror, so you can get it with those two settings.
How to rotate video on iPhone
The Photos app on iPhone can rotate and flip a video while you edit it, as Apple’s support guide explains. Use this page when you want a separate rotated file to send, upload or open in another app, or when the clip came from somewhere else. Open this page in Safari or Chrome, tap the file box, choose the video from your photo library or the Files app and follow the steps. The result goes to the Downloads folder in Files.
How to flip video on iPhone
For a mirrored copy, set Rotate to No rotation, tick Mirror and press Start. This is useful for front-camera videos where text came out backwards.
How to rotate video in Android
Open this page in Chrome, tap the file box and pick the clip from your gallery or file manager. Choose the rotation, press Start and download. The new file plays the right way up in your gallery and when you share it. Phones are slower than computers, and files over about 1.5 GB may be slow or fail on a phone.
How to rotate video for Instagram and WhatsApp Status
If a clip shows up sideways after you post it, the app probably ignored the rotation note in the file. Rotate it here, so the pixels themselves are upright, and post the new file. If you then need a different shape, for example 9:16 for Reels or Status, use resize video (fits with bars) or the video cropper (fills the frame).
How to rotate video in VLC, Premiere Pro or Windows
Many people search how to rotate a video in VLC or Premiere Pro. VLC can turn the picture while you watch, and saving a rotated copy takes extra steps in its convert feature. Premiere Pro can rotate a clip inside an editing project, followed by an export. Windows Media Player is a player and does not save a rotated copy. If you just want a rotated file, this page gives you one directly in any up-to-date browser on Windows, Mac or Linux, with nothing to install.
Check the rotation of a video
To see whether a file carries a rotation note, open it in the video metadata viewer. It shows a Rotation row along with the resolution. Files made with this tool show 0°, because the turn is in the pixels.
How accurate is rotate video?
The turn is exact: a 90° rotation swaps width and height (1280×720 became 720×1280 in our test), and 180° and Mirror keep the size. Honest limits:
It re-encodes. To turn the pixels, every frame is encoded again at a balanced quality setting. The result looks very close to the original, but it is not a bit-for-bit copy, and the file size changes.
Quarter turns only. There is no free angle such as 5° to straighten a tilted horizon.
Existing rotation notes count. The angle is added on top of what the file says. If the preview shows the video correctly but another app shows it sideways, choose No rotation and press Start: the tool writes the turn into the pixels.
Codecs. A few unusual codecs may not open in the browser; the page tells you instead of failing silently.
Why this tool is different
Many online tools upload your video to their server to rotate it, and some only change the rotation note, which leaves the clip sideways in apps that ignore it. VidHaul turns the actual pixels, with the WebCodecs API, the video engine built into modern browsers, on your own phone or computer. Nothing is uploaded, so it is safe for family videos and private recordings, and once you have pressed Start the work keeps going even without an internet connection.
The result is checkable: the width and height follow the table above, and the video metadata viewer shows no rotation note on the output. The tool does only this job. It does not crop, resize, change the speed or alter the colours.
What we measure
We test with real files in a real browser. For rotate video we check the output size after a quarter turn: a 1280×720 video rotated 90° right came out at 720×1280. The diagram and the size table are computed from the same rule for the other options.
What we do not measure: we do not score visual quality, and we do not publish processing times, because they depend on your device. The result card shows the file size before and after, and Copy summary copies those numbers for your notes.
