AVIF to JPG Converter - Change .avif Images to JPG Online Free

Turn .avif images saved from websites into JPGs that open in every app, editor and upload form. Nothing is uploaded.

AVIF to JPG is the fix for images that look fine in your browser but won’t open anywhere else. More and more websites, online shops and news sites send their pictures as AVIF, a modern format that is much smaller than JPG. When you save such a picture, you get a file ending in .avif, and then your photo viewer shows an error, your editor won’t import it, or an upload form says the file type is not allowed. This AVIF to JPG converter changes the file into the most widely supported picture format there is, right inside your browser and up to 30 files at a time. Below we show how the conversion works, what it does to file size with our own measured numbers, how to open AVIF files in common programs, and when JPG is not the right choice.

How does the AVIF to JPG converter work?

The tool uses the AVIF decoder that is already built into your browser. It asks the browser to decode the image, draws the result at its full width and height onto a canvas that is first filled with white, and saves that canvas as JPEG at the quality on the slider (92% by default). The white fill matters only for images with transparent areas, because JPG can’t store transparency. If an AVIF is animated, the browser hands over the first frame, so that is the one that becomes a JPG.

Worked example (measured). In our own Chrome test we converted a 600 × 900 AVIF photo of 21.8 KB. The JPG at the default 92% was 100.1 KB, still 600 × 900. That is 4.6 times bigger, which sounds bad but is expected: AVIF packs the same picture into far fewer bytes than JPG can. The JPG is not better or worse to the eye; it is simply the price of a format every program understands.

How to use

  1. Add the .avif files

Drag up to 30 AVIF images onto the box, click it to choose files, or paste a copied image with Ctrl+V.

  2. Check the quality

JPG at 92% is already set. Open More options to move the Quality slider; the list updates by itself.

  3. Download

Click Download on a row, or Download all (ZIP) for the set. Copy summary copies the before and after sizes.

Why VidHaul

Fixes “file type not supported”

JPG opens in old photo viewers, Office, print shops, email and upload forms that turn AVIF away.

Same picture, same size in pixels

The JPG keeps the exact width and height of the AVIF. Nothing is cropped or scaled.

Clean white for transparency

JPG can’t be see-through, so transparent areas are filled with pure white instead of black or grey.

Free and private

Conversion happens in your browser. No upload, no account, no watermark and no limit.

Why websites give you AVIF files

Images are usually the heaviest part of a web page. Google’s page-speed tools tell site owners to serve modern formats such as AVIF and WebP because they have better compression than JPG and PNG. So a site often keeps a JPG or PNG for older browsers and sends AVIF to browsers that can show it. When you right-click and choose “Save image as”, you get the version your browser received, the AVIF. Nothing is wrong with the file; your other software just hasn’t caught up with the format.

According to MDN, AVIF works in Chrome since version 85, Firefox 93, Safari 16.1 and Edge 121. Programs outside the browser vary a lot: some recent apps open it, many older photo viewers, office programs, print shop systems and upload forms don’t.

How much bigger does the JPG get?

Converting from an efficient format to JPG always makes the file grow. These are our own measured results for the same kind of conversion with this tool, all at the default 92% quality:

Source file vs JPG at 92% (measured)AVIF photo21.8 KBas JPG100.1 KB (4.6×)WebP photo70.2 KBas JPG150.5 KB (2.1×)PNG logo4.5 KBas JPG17.3 KB (3.8×)
Our own tests in Chrome, October and November 2026: 600 × 900 AVIF photo, 1200 × 800 WebP photo, 800 × 600 PNG logo with transparent corners. Grey is the original file, orange is the JPG.

The AVIF grew the most because it was the most efficient to start with. If the JPG is too heavy for an upload form, you have three options: lower the Quality slider under More options (75 to 85% is usually still clean), use the compress image to 100 KB tool to hit a size exactly, or make the picture smaller in pixels with the image resizer.

How to convert AVIF to JPG on any device

Windows PC

Open this page in Chrome or Edge (Edge 121 or newer reads AVIF) and drag the files from your Downloads folder. The JPGs you save open in the Photos app, Paint, Word and any upload form.

Mac

Safari 16.1 or newer, Chrome and Firefox all work. Drag the .avif files from Finder, then save with Download all (ZIP).

Android

Use Chrome, tap the box and pick the file from Downloads. The JPG appears in your downloads and can be shared like any photo.

iPhone and iPad

Use Safari on iOS 16 or newer, tap the box and choose the image from Files. Tap Download; the JPG goes to the Downloads folder in Files.

How to open an AVIF file in Photoshop, Paint and other programs

Support for AVIF in desktop software depends on the program and its version, and it changes with updates. The simple rule: if the program refuses the file or opens it looking wrong, convert it and open the converted file.

Which file to make when a program won’t open the AVIF
Program or placeConvert toWhy
Photoshop, CorelDRAW, Illustrator (older versions)JPG, or PNG if it has transparencyBoth import everywhere; PNG keeps see-through parts
Paint and old photo viewersJPGOpens instantly, small file
Job, exam or government upload formJPG, then compress if there is a KB limitForms often allow only JPG or JPEG
Word, PowerPoint, Google DocsJPG for photos, PNG for logosAccepted by every version
Print shopJPG at 95 to 100%Highest JPG quality for printing
Your own websiteKeep the AVIF, or use WebPConverting to JPG makes the page heavier

If the image has a transparent background, such as a logo or a product cut-out, choose PNG instead: AVIF to PNG keeps the transparency that JPG would fill with white.

Which JPG quality should you choose?

The slider under More options goes from 50 to 100%. The default 92% is chosen so the JPG looks like the original. Lower values give smaller files with more risk of blotches in smooth areas such as skies and skin; higher values keep fine detail for printing. For most saved web images, which were already compressed by the website, going above 92% adds bytes but no visible detail, because that detail was never in the AVIF.

What happens to transparent and animated AVIFs?

JPG has no transparency, so transparent areas become white. In our own test with a transparent PNG logo converted to JPG, the see-through corners measured pure white (255, 255, 255), and the same happens with a transparent AVIF. An animated AVIF becomes a single JPG of its first frame. If you need the motion, a JPG can’t hold it.

How accurate is the AVIF to JPG converter?

  • Pixels are kept. The JPG has the exact width and height of the AVIF; only JPG compression at your chosen quality is added.
  • It needs a browser that reads AVIF. The tool uses your browser’s own decoder and has no fallback. Old browsers (for example Safari before 16.1 or Edge before 121) show “This file couldn’t be read”. Update the browser or use current Chrome or Firefox.
  • High-end AVIF features are flattened. AVIF can store HDR and more than 8 bits per colour. The canvas saves a standard 8-bit sRGB JPG, so HDR images may look flatter than in the browser.
  • No metadata is copied. Any camera or location details in the AVIF are not written into the JPG.
  • Size grows. As measured above, expect the JPG to be several times bigger than the AVIF.

Why this tool is different

A typical online AVIF to JPG converter uploads your file, converts it on a server and sends the JPG back. This one doesn’t need a server at all: your browser already contains an AVIF decoder (it uses it to show images on websites), and the page simply asks it to decode the file, draws the picture on a canvas and saves it as JPEG with the browser’s own encoder. The file is read from your disk and the JPG is written back to your disk. It never travels over the internet, so there is no upload wait and nothing is stored anywhere, and after the page has loaded it works offline.

Because the browser does the decoding, the JPG looks the way the image looked on the website where you found it. And every claim on this page is checkable: drop a file in and the row shows the size before, the size after and the pixel size. Copy summary copies those numbers, and Copy link with these settings saves your output and quality in a link.

What we measure

For each file the tool measures the original size, the decoded width and height, and the size of the finished JPG, and shows them in the result list. The sizes in the chart above come from our own tests with this tool in Chrome in October and November 2026.

What we do not do: we don’t score visual quality, we don’t sharpen or resize, we don’t keep metadata, and we don’t create AVIF files (browsers can’t write AVIF). We also don’t collect anything about the images you convert.
